With proper gout treatment, most people will be able to control their symptoms, and lead productive lives. Gout can be effectively treated with one, or a combination of therapies.

The Goals Of Gout Treatment

* To ease the pain of acute attacks

* To prevent future attacks

* The prevention of tophi (deposits of uric acid)

* The prevention of kidney stones

* The prevention of disability, as a result of gout Acute attacks of gout should be treated as soon as possible. The most common treatments are daily high doses of nonsteriodal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDS) taken orally, or corticosteriods which may be taken orally, or injected directly into the joint.

The most commonly prescribed NSAIDS are Indocin, Anaprox, and Naprosyn. These drugs will work to reduce the inflammation caused by deposits of uric acid crystals.

The most commonly prescribed corticosteriod is Prednisone. This is a strong anti-inflammatory hormone. With this treatment, patients will often improve within a few hours, and the attack will completely subside within a week.

Should these two gout treatment methods fail to control the symptoms, the doctor may consider a drug called Colchicine. Most effective when taken within the first 12 hours of an attack, the doctor may request that the patient take this medication hourly until symptoms subside, or side effects make continuation uncomfortable. These unpleasant side effects may include nausea, vomiting, abdominal cramps, or diarrhea. Doctors advise their patients to keep a supply of medications on hand, and to begin self-medication at the first sign of an acute attack.

To Help Prevent Future Attacks

* Carefully follow the instructions and take all medications prescribed by the doctor.

* Inform the doctor about all other medications, and vitamins you are taking. Some may increase your risk of hyperuricemia.

* Keep an eye on your progress with regular visits to the doctor.

* Eat a healthy and balanced diet avoiding foods that are high in purines.

* Help to remove uric acid from the body by drinking plenty of fluids, especially water.

* Try to exercise regularly, and maintain a healthy body weight. If you are overweight, lose some weight, but do so without a diet designed for quick weight loss. These diets may increase the amount of uric acid in the blood.

For those who suffer from gout, the combination of effective gout treatment, along with disciplined prevention measures can restore your enjoyment of life.

The best way of treating gout is through one of the many natural treatment products on the market today. For a doctor to treat gout, it can get expensive. You have to pay the doctor's copay before you even get the treatment, then he will probably recommend prescription products that will only serve to further deplete your pocketbook. As a result, treating gout the traditional way can get quite expensive.

Studies are starting to show, though, that treating gout with natural remedies can be just as effective, if not more effective in some cases, that treating this painful condition with traditional medications and therapies. One of the best ways of treating gout with natural products is by consuming a decent amount of fresh bing cherries.

Cherries For Gout?

While it may seem hard to believe that eating one of your favorite foods may help treat your gout problems, it is true. Gout episodes occur when uric acid builds up in the blood stream. When the levels get too high, the kidneys can no longer serve as a filter to get it out of the blood stream. As a result, the acid hardens and settles in your joint, causing the pain and swelling you may have noticed. Fresh bing cherries, though, seem to work to clear the acid out of the blood, fighting the crystallization process, helping to reduce outbreaks and your level of pain. If you are interested in trying this remedy, consume a bowl of bing cherries (only fresh bing cherries will work for you own experimentation purposes) each day for a month. Chances are good that you will notice a serious difference in your gout outbreaks.

Gout is a form of arthritis that causes inflammation, pain, sourness and swelling of the joints, also reducing their mobility. It mostly it affects the joints of the lower body limbs, such as toes, heels, ankles and knees, but it can also affect the joints of the upper body. Gout sometimes affects skin and soft tissue like muscles and tendons, causing swelling and rigidity. There are many factors that contribute to the occurrence and the development of gout, such as genetic predisposition to the disease, renal insufficiency, inappropriate diet and lack of proper exercise. Among all these triggers of gout, the quantity and the type of food consumed seem to play a very important role.

In the past, gout was referred to as ?the disease of kings?, as it mostly affected rich people. The high incidence of gout among the rich, noble families in the past is explained by the fact that they had better access to expensive, exotic foods that in present are known to facilitate the development of the disease. Today, many people are still confronted with gout as a result of improper diet, unaware of the damage that some foods cause to the organism. Apart from foods that cause gout, another important factor in the development of the disease is obesity.

Gout is mainly caused by the crystallization of a substance called uric acid in the bloodstream, causing arteries to block. In normal quantities, uric acid is neutral to the organism. However, when in excess, it may cause a lot of damage. Uric acid is a residual product formed in the synthesis of purine. Purine is a substance that resides in fat meats, fish, some dairy products and vegetables. Foods that cause gout are rich in saturated fats and purines, therefore contributing to the excessive secretion of uric acid. Among the foods that cause gout, the most dangerous are considered to be red meats and some fish. Beef, pork, lamb and seafood should be avoided when suffering from gout. Furthermore, healthy people should control their intake of such foods in order to prevent the acquiring of gout. Other foods like chicken meat, low dairy, grains, green vegetables and fruits are well tolerated among people who suffer from gout.

In order to ameliorate the symptoms of gout, foods that cause gout should be excluded from the diet in favor of healthy food. Also, the consumption of alcohol should be reduced, as it increases the amount of uric acid produced by the organism. Smoking can aggravate the symptoms of gout too, slowing the natural process of healing and interfering in the right circulation of the blood.

By drinking plenty of water you will help the body in eliminating the excess of uric acid. It is strongly recommended to drink at least 2 liters of water a day. Also, try to reduce the amount of saturated fats from your diet and eat more carbohydrate rich foods such as cereal, pasta and bread. Consume plenty of fruits, as they contain lots of important vitamins and minerals. Fruits like apples, oranges, nectarines and lemons should be a part of your daily menu.
